The Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association Inc. (ASJA) has issued a media release expressing concern over the recent vote cast by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago at the United Nations regarding the reappointment of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
While affirming its respect for the sovereign right of the Government to determine the nation’s foreign policy, ASJA believes the vote appears to represent a departure from Trinidad and Tobago’s longstanding and principled support for the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
The Association recalled the leadership of former Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, whose efforts contributed significantly to Trinidad and Tobago’s recognition of the State of Palestine in 2024. ASJA noted that this recognition reflected the nation’s enduring commitment to international law, diplomacy, peace, human dignity, and justice.
ASJA has respectfully called on the Government to review its current position, taking into account Trinidad and Tobago’s proud tradition of supporting humanitarian principles, the rule of international law, and peaceful dialogue among nations.
The Association also reminded the national community that, beyond diplomatic and political considerations, the humanitarian crisis in Palestine continues to inflict immense suffering on innocent civilians, particularly children and families. It called upon people of goodwill—and especially the Muslim community—to continue praying for the people of Palestine, to advocate for justice and peace, and to support efforts that uphold the sanctity of human life.
Concluding its statement, ASJA prayed that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants relief to those who are suffering, protects the innocent, comforts the bereaved, and guides all nations towards a just, peaceful, and lasting resolution to the conflict.
