The following roster of the men who served honourably in the role as President of the Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association (ASJA) of Trinidad and Tobago.  The list is sourced from ASJA’s 70th Anniversary Souvenir Magazine 1935 – 2005.

Jama Masjid in San Fernando, Trinidad

 


Imam Syed Mohammed Hosein from San Fernando. Elected as the first President of ASJA Inc. He was Urdu/Hindi interpreter in the courts and the first Muslim Divorce Officer.  Imam Hosein was a member of the Indian Advisory Council.  He visited India in 1934 as a delegate of the Muslim Community of Trinidad in search of a qualified Moulvi. At the end of 1935 Syed Hosien arrived with Nazir Ahmed Simab Munshi Fazli. He was responsible for spearheading the debate against Qadianism with Moulvi Ameer Ali.  Syed Mohammed Hosein also served as Imam of Jama Masjid in San Fernando.


Mohammed Hosein Shah from San Fernando.  Barrister at law, Councillor in the San Fernando Borough Council, member of the West Indian Federal Parliament, scout at the World Jamboree in England, Chairman of ASJA Education Board and President of San Fernando Jama Masjid.  He was appointed as President of the Inter-Colonial Muslim Organization at the the Intercolonial Muslim Conference, held at the Jama Masjid Hall, Queens Street, Port of Spain in 1950 under the patronage of His Eminence Abdul Aleem Siddiqui.


Mohammed Ibrahim

Mohammed Ibrahim from Port of Spain.  Fondly known as MI, proprietor-businessman,  constructed the Jama Masjid in Port of Spain.  MI travelled extensively (India, Europe, Arabia).  Established maktabs and primary schools.  He served as President of ASJA in both pre and post World War II periods.  He was instrumental in hosting many visitors and missionaries to Trinidad in particular His Eminence Maulana Abdul Aleem Siddiqui and Maulana Fazlur Rahman Ansari.

Esau Rahaman from Sangre Grande.  He was a Proprietor/Merchant and an avid Islamic Worker.  He served as President of ASJA for one year.


John Mohammed from Port of Spain.  A merchant by profession, he assisted MI in building the Jama Masjid in Port of Spain.  John also  served as Director of Trinidad Prov. Dealers as well as Treasurer of the East Indian Cricket Board of Control.

Haji Shafick Rahaman (ra)

Haji Sheik Mohammed Shafik Rahaman from San Fernando.  He was the son of Hafiz Yacoob Ali, Trinidad’s first Hafiz and Qari.  He was the Managing Director of the Rahamut Group of Companies, President of South Chamber of Commerce, President of the Petroleum Dealers Association, Director of Muslim World League (RABITA), and President General of ASJA for 19 years to 1983.

Haji Abdool Sattar

Haji Abdool Sattar from Princes Town. Proprietor and businessman. He served as Treasurer, Vice President and President of ASJA, the latter for seven years to 1990.  He donated the land and built the Princes Town ASJA Primary School as well as the Jama Masjid on High Street, Princes Town.  He also supervised the building of the San Fernando ASJA Primary School.

Dr Mansoor Ibrahim

Al Haj Dr. Mansoor Ibrahim from Port of Spain. He is a Medical Practioner (Gynaecologist) by profession. He was a house scholarship winner at the Progressive Educational Institute in Port of Spain, attended Queens Royal College and obtained his MBBS degree at St Andrews University in Scotland. Served as a member of the Inter-Religious Organization (IRO), the Muslim Coordinating Council (MCC) and a serving Muslim Marriage Officer. Served as ASJA’s President from 1990 to 2000. He was awarded the Chaconia Medal Silver in 1997 by the President of Trinidad & Tobago for Community Service.

Haji Sayeed Sattar

Haji Sayeed Sattar from Princes Town. He was the son of Haji Abdool Sattar. He was a teacher at ASJA Boys’ College in San Fernando, specialized in teaching biology and other human sciences until a career change transformed him into a business owner. He served for many years as the President of the Princes Town Jama Masjid. On the ASJA Education Board he served honourably as Secretary and was also Vice President of Trinidad and Tobago Muslim YOuth Organization (TTMYO). Haji Sayeed served on ASJA’s Executive as Second Vice President and was elected President of ASJA in 2000.

Haji Yacoob Ali

Haji Yacoob Ali a pharmacist, Attorney at Law, businessman.  He is the son in-law of Haji Shafik Rahaman.  Haji Yacoob served for many years as President of the Pharmacy Board,  President of National Youth Council and President of TTMYO.  He has served on ASJA Education Board for close to four decades both as its past Secretary and current Chairman.  On ASJA’s Executive he has held many positions including First Vice President and currently President of ASJA.
