Trinidad Muslim publishes poetry book

Quiet, soft spoken and self-effacing, Haymad Mohammed is a teacher, charity worker and poet. He teaches at the San Fernando ASJA Primary School and gives extra lessons at the Islamic Home for Children in Gasparillo. This Claxton Bay resident, who has been writing for the past 20 years, is known nationally and internationally for his beautiful work. His writing has been published throughout the West Indies, India, Pakistan, and South Africa. The last place he published his works was in the Fiji Islands.

Rebirth

Mohammed has been published in several fora, including the Eid-ul-Fitr and Tutor magazine. He has also written for the Horticultural Society of Trinidad and Tobago.  Before teaching at ASJA Primary, he was a sunday school teacher at the San Fernando Mosque for ten years, as well as a process plant operator for Yara Trinidad Ltd and Industrial Gases Ltd. While teaching at the Mosque, he was approached by the Imam about teaching in a school. The Imam spoke to the Islamic Board and his first two teaching jobs were in Carapichaima and Point Fortin. In 1991 he began teaching at San Fernando ASJA Primary.

He was also a television presenter of the Al-Hikmat under 15 Islamic Quiz, as well as an announcer for Radio 610. Mohammed said: “Everyone knows me as a very open individual who mixes freely with everyone. As for my poetry, I draw inspiration from elements of science and social studies, as well as meditation and nature. I began using it in my classes so I decided to put it in a book titled Garden of Flowers.” He added: “I also wrote the Islamic column for the Trinidad Guardian from 1995 to 2006, and had 245 publications from that column. “One of my other significant achievements was poetry I had written to the President of India as well as a tribute to past T&T President, Noor Hassanali.”

Rebirth

As I lay close to the seashore
Worn out waves caressed my back,
So I got a new taste of life,
As my sorrows were drowned by joys.
The swaying of coconut hands,
Dangling coconuts in the air,
And whistling sounds of rushing air
Through the jolly leaves,
All filled me with a serene thrill.
The picturesque hills,
So vivid, so captivating,
Added light to my life;
As I found myself
Enthralled by their mystic presence.
Now I see hope, future and light,
As a new horizon beckons me.
